Buffalo Berry is most common in the eastern part of Grand Canyon's South Rim from Moran Point to Desert View. The bush is compact and rounded, up to five feet tall but usually less. The oval one-inch leaves are cupped downward. They are silvery green, thick and woolly, with silver scales.
Buffalo Berry leaves resemble little silver-green tongues. The shrub is evergreen.

Inconspicuous March-June yellow flowers give way to 3/8 inch gray edible, juicy fruits important to wildlife.
